GUIMARÃES WITH SPORTS PRACTICE ABOVE THE NATIONAL AVERAGE

Around 33% of the Guimarães population practices regular sport, still well above the national average, as previous studies have shown.

This was one of the conclusions presented today at the Guimarães Gymnastics Academy, within the scope of the public presentation of the study on “Sports Habits in Guimarães”, carried out by the European Institute of Higher Studies (IEES).

According to the analysis of the data collected, the vast majority of the population that performs physical exercise is satisfied with the sports offer in the municipality, noting the good accessibility, quality and quantity of infrastructure.

The study also reveals that football is the modality with the most practice and on which the municipality should bet the most, followed by swimming, athletics, gymnastics and futsal. Within the universe of the population that practices sports, about half opt for spontaneous practice (no specific time), giving preference to walks, followed by football and the gym, with the preferred places for exercising being urban green parks and gyms.

In the analysis of the behavior of non-practitioners, the fact that 14% claimed to intend to practice sports in the near future stands out, most of them being women. The lack of time is the most suitable reason for not practicing any type of sports activity.

It should also be noted that a large part of the surveyed population associates green/outdoor spaces with preferred sports spaces, an interesting and relevant data to outline a strategic bet on sports policy, in a city that wants to be increasingly sustainable and sporty. Finally, sport and tourism are the areas of development that must be prioritized by the approximately 1.300 residents of Guimarães who responded to this survey.

In a ceremony attended by Enrique Justo, President of the IEES, Prof. Dimas Pinto, study coordinator and Amadeu Portilha, President of Tempo Livre, the Councilor for Sports, Nelson Felgueiras, highlighted as a determining element of this study “the very positive perception that the local population has about the existing sports facilities and the various programs and activities developed to promote sport and physical activity”, combined with the fact that they increasingly look to green spaces as preferred spaces for sports.

For the mayor, the results of this study are a source of pride for the people of Guimarães, but it leaves us with the challenge of making them even better, with sports public policies that respond assertively to the challenges it poses”, further mentioning that “this study is an essential tool to define a strategy for the future of sport in the municipality, and with this concrete data, it is possible to create a line of action that guides our community towards the importance of regular physical exercise and an active life and with healthy habits".

The presentation of this study is yet another initiative of the evocative program of the 10th anniversary of CED2013, which already had a first action implemented, with the podcast “Memória do Futuro”, which has the testimony of several personalities of Guimarães, who had an impact on the sporting past of the city, and which has been available on several platforms since last February.
